Housing

The housing cost will include accomodation in one of the YLC dormitories located within walking distance of the main center.  Each YLC housing facility is equipped with a European washing machine, satellite television, and VCR located in a student common area. Bedrooms are furnished with a telephone extension for student convenience. All local and international calls can be received free of charge, however students will be charged for outgoing calls. Sheets, blankets and towels are all provided by the YLC for the duration of your stay.  

Students are entitled to housing one day prior to and one day after the conclusion of study.  Additional periods of stay may be arranged at a cost of $15/
€15 per night subject to availability. Students may request a single room as available. 

A U.S. $150/€150 housing damage must be paid prior to arrival in Yemen.  The deposit will be returned to the student upon check-out according to the YLC Housing Agreement guidelines.

Housing Guidelines effective upon arrival

1. Housing

  • All Center facilities are non-smoking.  Smoking is only permitted on the roof and outside of the buildings.
  • Possession or use of alcohol, or illicit drugs, is not permitted within the Center’s facilities.  Possession or use of such may result in immediate expulsion.
  • Only Center students and staff are allowed in the Center’s facilities.
  • The $150/€150 refundable room deposit is due when you register and will be returned prior to departure, minus the cost of any damages or outstanding account balances.  A $50/€50 key deposit is due upon arrival in Yemen.
  • A room inventory form will be completed upon your arrival and prior to departure from the Center’s housing.
  • You are liable for all damages done to your room and its contents during your stay.
  • You are responsible for cleaning your own room.  Please leave your wastebasket outside your door to be emptied each morning.
  • Please keep your room door and the door to the housing floors locked at all times.
  • The Center is not liable for any lost, damaged, or stolen belongings.
  • Due to the mud construction of the Center’s buildings, please use adhesive materials such as "ticky-tack" when hanging posters, etc., on the walls.  Do not use tacks, nails, etc.
  • Please conserve water and electricity.

2. Communal Areas

  • The student kitchen is equipped with appliances and utensils for your convenience.  Please clean them after use and treat them with care.
  • Please report any appliance malfunction to the Center staff.
  • Drinking water straight from the tap is not recommended. Bottled water is widely available and inexpensive.  You may also boil water at least 5 minutes before consumption.
  • The purchase of bathroom and kitchen sundries such as dish soap, toilet paper, etc., is your responsibility.
  • A washing machine is provided for your convenience.  Please set the water level only as high as is necessary.
  • All bathrooms are shared.  Please be considerate of your colleagues and clean after yourself.
  • Please do not flush sanitary towels down the toilet.  Bins are provided for their disposal.
  • The student Mafraj is a common area for all students. Please help keep it clean.
  • Please conserve water and electricity.

3. Visas

  • Please submit your passport and six photos to the secretary at the bottom of the stairs upon your arrival. These are needed for visa extensions and your student ID card.
  • If you wish to extend your studies at the Center, notify the administration office of your intention at least two weeks prior to the expiration of your term.  You may need to submit three additional photos for the visa extension.
  • The Center will arrange and pay for the necessary visa extensions during the period of your study at the Center.
  • Yemeni law requires an exit-visa in order to leave the country.  Please inform the administration office two weeks prior to leaving the country.  Please keep in mind that you will need a new entry visa if you plan to return to Yemen.

4. Mail                  

  • Mail is picked up from the Post Office Saturday through Thursday.  Be sure to give your mailing address as:

  • Your mail can be picked up in the secretary’s office at the bottom of the stairs.
  • Students are responsible for delivering personal mail to the Post Office.

5. Communications- phone / e-mail                

  • The Center has a new high-speed sattelite internet connection. The $20/20 is included in full-package prices. Internet is avainlable from 8 am until 10 pm Saturday through Wednesday, from 8 am until 12 pm on Thursday and from 6 pm until 10 pm on Fridays.
  • Facsimiles may be sent from the Center at a cost of 700YR/page.  There is no charge to receive incoming faxes.
  • Local and international calls may be received in your room without charge to you.
  • Local calls from your room to areas within Sana'a will be charged at the rate of 20YR/minute.
  • A $50/50 USD deposit is required to activate international calling capability from your room.  International calls to Arab countries will be billed at 200YR/minute (appx. US $1.15).  All other international calls will be billed at 300YR/minute (appx. US$ 1.70).

 6. Travel

  • Always inform the Center staff prior to traveling outside the capital.
  • Travel papers are necessary for travel outside the capital and will be arranged for Center students only.
  • The administration secretary at the bottom of the stairs will arrange for your travel papers.  Please advise the secretary of your travel plans no later than one working day prior to departure.

7. General

  • To ensure you receive credit for your studies at the Yemen Language Center, contact the International Studies office at your institution prior to departing for Yemen.
  • A certificate of completion will be awarded to you based upon the results of a written and oral exam.  If a letter of recommendation or credit transfer information is needed for another institution, please request such from the administration office two weeks prior to the end of your term.
  • Single rooms are secured for 5 weeks only and you may be required to share a room after the end of the 5-week period. In the unlikely event that this occurs, any extra monies paid will be refunded to you.
  • If you come home late please be considerate of your colleagues and neighbors.
  • To use any 120-volt electric appliances you will need to use a transformer. These are available locally.
  • If you lose your Center keys there will be a $50/€50 fee for replacement.
  • Your Center ID card is very important and you should carry this card with you at all times.  If it is lost a 500YR fee will be charged for replacement.
  • In the event of illness the Center can arrange for you to visit a physician, laboratory, clinic, or hospital as needed.  You will be responsible for all fees arising from medical services or treatment.
